POLITICS

I can't believe it, but I just read an op-ed by the surly Pat Buchanan with which I actually largely agree.

Who Commissioned Us to Remake the World? » Patrick J. Buchanan - Official Website
"Before leaving for Moscow, (U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul) told NPR’s “Morning Edition”: “We’re not going to get into the business of dictating Russia’s path to democracy. … We’re just going to support what we like to call ‘universal values’ — not American values, not Western values, universal values.”

But what, exactly, are these “universal values”?

And who are we to impose them on other nations? Did Divine Providence assign us this mission? Who do we Americans think we are?"
This is something I've thought a lot about over the years, any time it seems to me that we are "sticking our nose in" and playing the part of the Enforcer. Just who do we think we are?

I love my country. I come from a long line of military family, West Point graduates, diehard voters and volunteers and activists. We all have strong political leanings, patriotic values, hell I get misty at a good rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. But yeah just who the hell do we think we are? When our own system clearly isn't working so well, why is it we feel compelled to try to force it on everyone else?

If the bigger guy is beating up on the little guy, sure--I feel we have the responsibility, as one of the world's stronger countries, to step in and help, to help stop ethnic cleansing, mass murder, etc. But why must we always spout how the American style of Democracy is the morally righteous and the only right way to live, and embark on campaigns to spread OUR way of living to the rest of the world? It seems to be not just an American fault but a radical Islamic fault as well. It isn't much comfort to know we share this way of thinking, in some ways, with the people who engineered 9/11.

Doesn't it ever occur to anyone that our pride and love for our country and our way of living is great, but that other countries also have pride and love for theirs?

Who decides what is right, and why does everyone else have to conform to it? Take for an example the mundane dress aspect of the hijab or niqab (veiled version), worn by some women in Islamic cultures/backgrounds. Some people in other countries see the hijab/niqab as a glaring example of oppression of women. Some Islamic women also see it that way and have rebelled against wearing them. However there is a significant portion of the Islamic nation of women who express no such notion and feel it is their cultural standard, gives them more independence, promotes their freedom and their beliefs. They feel oppressed when it is discriminated against, or even outlawed:

France's Veil Ban Goes into Effect | Europe | English
(old news link)

Of course there is oppression of women in the Middle East. Can anyone argue with a straight face that there isn't oppression of women going on in the USA right now? It's worse over there, I know. But are there ANY countries that don't have murder, cruelty, rape, or discrimination? What makes our modern leaders so convinced that we are the moral leaders of the entire world?

Buchanan points out we can't even make up our own minds here about what is "universally right":
"What is the universally right stand on capital punishment — the Rick Perry position in Texas or the Andrew Cuomo position in New York?"
While I disgree with theories that the USA would be much better off by becoming an isolationist society--we still have responsibilities to the world--I think that our leaders have long been confusing responsibilities with greed and blind pride.
"If America wishes to lead the world, let us do it by example, as we once did, not by hectoring every nation on earth to adopt the American way, which as of now, does not seem to be working all that well for Americans."

JERICHO

It's mostly done. I made it extreeeemely simple (helps a little bit with lag except on weekends when everything is Lag Hell) but I like the results:
 View from spectators side
Equipment building (Someone said, "Wow, we had a locker room, now we have a garage...") :D
Ice View
Sebastian the GOHA cat
Empty stands waiting for some fans

Due to my real life job, I have had "virtually" no time at all to get in, build, or get anything at all done in Second Life, so it was a miracle I got this far. My job--as supposed "part-time"--has been almost as bad as my old one lately.
Should a break be coming: Still have to finish the underwater stuff at JH, and Bebe's treehouse and land on TS.

Some photos my wife took around the grid. I'm getting instructions on Second Life photography :)

FEISTY

"Jack" is feisty.
"Jack" being in a feisty, playful mood has the answer tonight..
This is Rocky, the Drama-Killin Pit Bull. Bought him last week and installed him, along with a kitty, at the new spectators area.
Rocky works remotely on commands. You can command him to walk, roam, patrol, attack, and a host of other interactions with avatars in the area. Or to sit in front of someone and monitor them, or even to take a piss when someone tries to "ride" them:)
NAUGHTY ROCKY!  :D

ZZZZ

Worked too hard and too long today to venture into SL but here's some good memories of yesterday:
 TUNES IN THE SKYBOX
Me and Bebe getting the tunes going on her new piano.
WINE AND GOOD CONVERSATION
Bebe is having a great time setting up our new skybox, furnishing it, shopping for it. I'm on my alt taking a breather here.

I have told 3 morons in SL this week to, if I may quote, "Shut the fuck up."

That may sound like small potatoes, but this is coming from a guy who usually is Mr Fix-It and Mr Patience, often to a fault.

I have sinned, and it felt good. So shut the fuck up.

HOWLS!

EXECUTIVE DECISION!

This late in the GOHA season, I have made an Executive Decision. (gasp!) I was informed by my team captain yesterday that he has been screwed this season, and placed the blame on me, and indicated that I am under the unresistable spell of KingHenrik (I know, WTF?). SL drama is so f&%^%ing stupid! Being the boss means you get to make up new rules sometimes, particularly if you pay thousands of dollars a year for little asinine assholes to entertain themselves. I traded myself and Katia to the Wolves. They have a low roster and could use the help, so Wolves here we come! It will be fun, some old teammates there too.
I have rapidly changed my tune this last year to be sure. Going from being Mr Nice Guy, Let's Work This All Out to, if you don't like it, STFU. I guess it's either old age or I finally got smart.

GO WOLVES!

FRIDAY

Jack Belvedere: stupidilty! a new word!
Katia Ixtab: I like it
Jack Belvedere:  MINE
Katia Ixtab: I can find many uses for it
Jack Belvedere:  TRADEMARK
Katia Ixtab: lol
Jack Belvedere:  you can use it

Jack Belvedere:  I have decided to take up pot smoking. Medicinal uses. Thoughts?
Katia Ixtab: is it legal there? lol
Jack Belvedere:  no
Katia Ixtab: carry on then
Jack Belvedere:  well, you can get pill form
Katia Ixtab: what good is that?
Jack Belvedere:  none. I tried it a few years ago. WTF is it called?
Katia Ixtab: no idea lol
Jack Belvedere:  I can't remember, due to all the pot smoking
Jack Belvedere:  wait!
Jack Belvedere: : eh
Jack Belvedere:  never mind, it's gone
Jack Belvedere:  it does have a name
Jack Belvedere: MARINOL
Jack Belvedere:  I'm just kidding though, I haven't smoked pot since maybe 1993

SNOW

We have our first snow on the ground for the whole winter so far. It was nice to look out the window at, but then I found our new car doesn't perform so well in it, even with just 2 inches so far. Took me 90 minutes to get the kids off to school and work. The Mrs took the truck today, and I think we're going to have to share it on snow days. Going to try some snow tires on the car, too. Vroom vroom.
 NICE BIG EMPTY SPACE
Going into SL shortly to do some terraforming and testing of the hockey script. We had a Stats site problem yesterday, no one registering as being on the ice, thus statistics such as assists, +/-, and most goaltender stats were incomplete or missing entirely.
The GOHA statistics engine is incredibly detailed, realistic, the first and best of its kind in SL. It does require SL to be communicating well and so that sometimes presents a problem we must solve!
TRYING TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH RINK
In the meantime, I got caught up in a conversation about healthcare, particularly in the United States, on the SLU forums.

It's not a matter of failing to acknowledge. See Misty's post.

Yes, exactly, I think that's the area where many people are misunderstanding and blaming government-imposed price controls in other countries, etc. While most of us have some conflicting economic issues with heavy govt-imposed price controls, the numbers don't lie in revealing how poorly the United States' health care system works (both in economy and patient outcome).

Even disregarding all the clear data on outcome (which sucks), how can anyone effectively argue that government-imposed price controls are bad when the data clearly shows that other countries both perform and spend significantly better than we do? In the US, almost 20% of the nation is uninsured, and YET: more money per person is spent on health care than any other nation in the world. Yet we rank 50th in life expectancy, 72nd in level of health, have a high infant mortality rate and twice as much healthcare costs as a percentage of the GDP as say, Japan, the UK and Australia.

Do you see? All other industrialized countries have better-run health care with more effective and financially solvent results.

Does a line need to be drawn? Absolutely! On the United States' profiteering greed.
:D
SLU is a great site. Gets a little testy like any forum sometimes but fantastic for in-depth conversations on just about any topic and very fairly moderated by the owner, Cristiano Midnight.

RECONSTRUCT

Things are kinda crazy right now at JH/TS due to, we're purchasing and transferring Treesong this week. I'm moving the rink to the west, converting it to an outdoor rink, and it will sit mostly on the 1/4 sim that Bebe and I are paying for.
JH RINK MINUS THE BUILDING
I made a copy and saved as much of the building as possible. It's just an awesome building, I can't be modest about that. I may wind up putting it up on Blueliner, since the JH is turning into an outdoor rink, we'll see. A lot of work, but possible. The building was based on the Ohio's Miami University hockey rink and probably my favorite of my own builds other than the Stanley Hotel.
VIOLET LAND PREPPED FOR SALE
Clearing the 3472m land in Jenner for sale. This wonderful little plot was me and Bebe's first home. We had the Baron Grayson house on it. I can get a little sentimental sometimes about land, I guess, I miss it already though real glad to have the bigger space and more prims coming up. Nice part about this land was privacy and the sandbox right across the way.
SOUTHWEST CORNER OF TREESONG
Barren, empty for now, but still beautiful. our plot will face west for the sunset.
Jack and Bebe in the temporary spectators section, Treesong, for a Cobras vs Wolves game tonight. It was a little odd getting back into hockey today. Other than a Foxes game I haven't really played in a month. My timing was off tonight, my boost was way too hard (I kept ending up in unlikely areas nowhere near where I was trying to go) and my own teammate checked me 20 times. I need to get back in the swing of it! Had a fun game though, lost in OT.
